September 24th Weekly Blog

Welcome to my blog and first post of the 2018-2019 school year! I look to post every Monday throughout the school year. My posts are sometimes random and other times intentional and the purpose is not to praise all the amazing work that happens, but do my best to capture what I hear, see and have experienced through staff, students, parents, and the community! Thank you and let's make it a great year!

Purpose Corner - "Purpose Corner" is a video segment where I continue to focus on what we are doing to boost student success at Waukesha West. It offers an inside view to the professional development and direction our school is taking for preparing our students to be college, career, and community ready!

Cadets of Waukesha WestCongratulations to the Cadets of Waukesha West Marching Band on your Class Triple-A first place trophy and for winning the caption award for Best Percussion section Saturday night at the Waukesha South Marchfest!

Fox River Marching Band Invitational - Another shout out to the Cadets of Waukesha West on a great performance this past Sunday at their own invitational. I am still not a band expert, but the visible improvement through all of the hard work and practice is clear. Keep up the great work Cadets and I look forward to another strong finish as has been custom these past two seasons! Also a big thank you to Mr. Dan Duffy, Kali Granzow, and the marching band parents for all of their work in making this a great event. WOW!...was it packed with people on such a beautiful day! It is wonderful to enjoy all the variety this competition brings among all of the participating schools.

Have you heard of the WLA?? - The WLA (Wolverine Leadership Academy) is at it once again as they begin year two as a student group in our school. The WLA is comprised of approximately 60ish students who went through a vetting process to be considered for the council. The purpose of the group is to have a cross representation of individuals within our building to work together to effect positive change through engaging and learning about leadership. This group has recently elected their internal executive committee as part of the structure for moving from discussion of topics to action. I want to give a shout out to all of the individual students who spoke to the entire leadership team about why they wanted to be on the executive committee.... your thoughts, insights, and originality was amazing to see and Mr. LeMieux and I were so very proud of your courage to be vulnerable in front of your peers! We are looking forward to another great year of growth for the WLA!

Freshmen Tailgate This past Thursday evening was our annual Freshmen tailgate. This tailgate continues on with our journey of welcoming Freshmen to West and is organized and run by our Ignition mentors. Thank you to the West staff members that were able to come and play some of the fun games that were set up with the Freshmen and get to know them a bit...more than half our staff made an appearance!! A special thanks to Mrs. Purpi for all of her hard work to help run the event and Mrs. Dominick for mastering the grill! Mentors were awesome and served our Freshmen well so they could enjoy the experience. I heard the Freshmen showed great support to the athletic events that were hosted in conjunction with the tailgate. I have also heard Freshmen have had a great start, let's keep it rolling with positivity Freshmen!

Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences - We are having our two nights of Parent/Teacher conferences at West High School starting Thursday, October 18th from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. and again on Tuesday, October 23rd from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. Both nights of conferences are by appointment only. These appointments are ten minutes in length. The sign-up link to schedule your conference will soon be emailed to all parents and posted on our school website. Teachers will be in their classrooms per our usual format. Teachers manage their own conferences so parents will experience different processes when meeting with each teacher. Communication from parents to teachers is critical for success and technology allows us to communicate better than we ever have. With that being said, I ask all parents to consider if they truly need to come in and take a teachers appointment slot if their child is meeting/exceeding expectations, but of course, all are parents welcome.
