Principal Blog Week of October 17th, 2022

Purpose Corner - This week I talk about what we are focused on as a school organization around professional development for our staff to ensure our students are prepared academically for their future. The transcript of the video can be accessed through this link.

WSMA State Marching Championship - A shout out to the Cadets of Waukesha West for their 4th place finish in class AAA at the WSMA State Marching Band competition that was held this past Saturday at UW-Whitewater. The Cadets also captured the Best Percussion caption award, which recognizes the best drumline/frontline percussion section in their division. Their final performance of "Slither & Stone" was outstanding inside Perkin's Stadium!  A big thank you to Mr. David Farmer, Mrs. Sue Anderson, and the marching band parents for all of their work in making this a great season! I was able to address the Cadets yesterday and am proud of all they overcame this season as they finished strong! Congrats!

Student Reps to the Board -
A big shout out to West High School Seniors Lily Flaherty and Brady Foster who represented West High School to the SDW Board of Education last week Wednesday, October 12th. They presented on all things happening at West so far this school year and did fantastically! They will be back again next semester to represent us. Anyone can access the board of education meetings to see the presentation through the school district website and Youtube channel.

Schedule for the Week of October 24th - Next week we have a short week. We will follow a Monday schedule for 10/24 and 10/25 meaning we will run all 8 hours of classes each day. 10/26 is an early release Monday schedule for this day and is below. This schedule will be available on our school's website this week. Please note that buses will arrive to West for pick-up on the early release day at 1:05 P.M.

AP Pacesetter Recognition - The Wisconsin Advanced Placement Advisory Council (WAPAC) recently announced the 2021 Advanced Placement Pacesetter Awards. WAPAC is comprised of Wisconsin secondary and collegiate educators that are dedicated to expanding access to Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and rigorous learning for all students. The Pacesetter Awards are unique to Wisconsin. They recognize schools for promoting both access to and excellence in AP courses. Schools are acknowledged for their efforts at three different levels. West High School was recognized at level 3! Only 109 of the approximately 520 public high schools in Wisconsin meet the criteria for recognition at one of the levels. West was 1 of 59 schools to receive level 3 distinction. This is a community celebration!!

Epic Proportions - Set in the 1930s, the play tells the story of two brothers, Benny and Phil, who go to the Arizona desert to be extras in the huge Biblical epic Exeunt Omnes. Things move very quickly in this riotous comedy and before you know it, Phil is directing the movie, and Benny is starring in it. To complicate matters further they both fall in love with Louise, the assistant director in charge of the extras. Along the way, there are gladiator battles, the Ten Plagues, and a cast of thousands portrayed by four other actors. Please come support the West End Players as they open on Friday night October 21st and perform throughout the weekend!

Principal Advisory Committee - The Principal Advisory Council for 2022-2023 has been set and we will be meeting for the first time next week Wednesday, October 19th. The meeting minutes will be shared out monthly through my blog. Principal Blog Week of October 10th, 2022

Purpose Corner - What is "Purpose Corner?" It is mostly the video component of my blog that focuses on things that are happening at West. These things may be part of other communications you have received, but I look to make them more relevant with a personal touch so the community can at least hear me speak about topics if they choose. This week I talk about what we are focused on as a school organization to ensure our students are prepared academically for their future college and/or career experiences. The transcript of the video can be accessed through this link.

Hispanic Heritage Month - National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Throughout this month, Spanish Club and Latinx Student Union have contributed to creating a series of small events to recognize, learn and celebrate including door decorating which you can enjoy through the pics below!

Homecoming 2022 - A big thank you to our Student Council members, Pep Rally emcees, Mrs. Emily Ortega, Mrs. Kirsten Towers, and all other staff and students who made this week a success!! Kudos for student behavior at the dance, as students were respectful of each other and danced the night away!! Please enjoy some pictures from the week of fun activities including our bonfire, pep rally, and dress-up days! A special thank you to the band Geology Club comprised of West students Alex Bonell (lead vocals), Ian Dutter (drums), Miah Miner (bass guitar), and Evan Hansen (guitar) for playing at the bonfire!

Freshmen Tailgate - Every year as part of our Freshmen welcome our Ignition mentors plan and invite all 9th-grade students to an All-Freshmen cookout. We grill out for staff and 9th-grade students and have lots of fun games and prizes as well. Everyone is then encouraged to attend the Freshman football game to support them in the stands. It is always a great event for Freshmen and staff to get to meet each other! Below are some pics from the event:

Wall of Fame Inductees 2022
 -
In my previous post, I introduced the newest members of the West Wall of Fame. A big shout out to Louis Cristosomo who came to join us for his induction, it was wonderful to have him back with us!! Please see below what is written on their plaques that are displayed on the right side wall of our main entrance area as you pass through the secure set of glass doors and a picture of Louis next to his plaque after the unveiling:

The "Wolverine Wardrobe" - Did you know we have a wardrobe that is open for all students every day, all day here at West? Well now you do... the expectations are to leave it like you found it, which is picked up and orderly. a reminder that it is in room F115 There is a place for hangers after items are shopped for and a place for donations to replenish our stock. We have a process for all lightly used clothing that is donated to be cleaned and displayed. Thank you to everyone who makes this resource successful, below are some pics of what it looks like when you walk in along with the clearly labeled donations and hangar bin...
