March 22nd Weekly Blog (Tuesday Edition)

Have a wonderful Spring break!! - It has been a year unlike any other, and my hope is for all staff, students, and families to find some time for rest and relaxation. No video this week and the blog will return the week of April, 12th, 2021.

ACT Aspire Testing - This is just a reminder that ALL freshmen and sophomore students will be ASPIRE testing for the entire day on Wednesday, April 7th. Virtual students are expected to come in person to test (similar to ACT). Per the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, all state testing must be conducted in person. More specific details will be provided in the next few days to families.

Mitigation in West's Hallways - Students have continued to focus on wearing their masks properly and making it a non-issue and we cruise into quarter four. The next mitigation reminder is for our hallways. "When walking in the hallways, all students should stay on the physical right side of the hallway or stairwell based on the direction they are walking while distancing 6 feet minimum from those in front of them." This comes directly from our mitigation procedures and I ask students to continue to do this as most students are now back in the building.

Lunch for families during Spring Break - Please see the information below regarding lunch option over our Spring Break which is next week beginning on Monday, March 29th.

March 15th Weekly Blog

Purpose Corner - This week I provide reminders of our COVID mitigation expectations as we move into the final quarter of this school year. Here is a link to the transcript of this video.

Employee Recognition - Congratulations to West attendance secretary Cheri Bonell on being named the school district's Employee of the Month for February!!! She has been exceptional in taking on COVID as our primary contact tracer and has managed attendance well with all of the changes to our instructional model this school year!

Congratulations to West English teacher Amy Menzel who was named as a Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship recipient! Mrs. Menzel was one of 101 teachers statewide to receive this award which is comprised of a $6,000.00 grant that is to be used to impact students in the classroom!

State Snowboard - I realized that I had not recognized our Waukesha Snowboard team and their 2nd place finish in the state which was held in LaCrosse in February. Congratulations! Members of the team include Joe Muren, Zach Simons, Calvin Hanke, Joey DeCorte, David Latka, and Matt Burr.

West Athletic Leadership Conference - A shout out to Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Kyle LeMieux for his guidance of our students-led Athletic Leadership Conference. This has been an annual event for our student/athletes for the past 9 years. This year with COVID, a new format was implemented which involved all students staying in-house here at West High School. Below is a statement about the day, followed by some pics...

On Thursday, March 11th, over 225 student-athletes attended the 9th Annual Waukesha West Athletics Leadership Conference.  At LC21, students learned about how their leadership has the power to "REVIVE THE CULTURE" of our athletic department after a unique and challenging year.  Student leaders hosted seminars including "Mental Toughness", "Leaving a Legacy", "SuperFans: Run It Back", and "Willing to Be First".  Grade level groupings took part in our Building a Winning Culture progression of courses: 9th-"Aspiring Wolverines", 10th-"Building Your Captain Resume", 11th-"Becoming a Vocal Leader", and 12th-"Leadership in the Real World".  Our leaders then gathered as teams, demonstrated critical thinking and self-reflection, and then crafted "Success Formulas" for their programs - IF they are able to control certain factors relative to relationships and performance within their teams, THEN they believe they will be closer to achieving big goals!
