Have you ever heard of Waukesha MADE? - Waukesha MADE is a partnership between the School District of Waukesha and local businesses. As of today those businesses are local manufacturers but the partnership is looking to grow in the areas of construction, autos and printing. One of the best portions of the MADE partnership is the collaboration of our students with these companies. These companies bring real world projects to our students looking for real world solutions and look to have their people work with our students to problem solve and accomplish these tasks. The mentorship is amazing and this partnership is continuing to grow in a positive direction. One of these projects involved WEST students who primarily worked with local manufacturer Weldall to build the table and water tank for a new CNC Plasma cutter exclusive to West. The capabilities are exceptional!!! We had many companies and people donate funds and their time to make this happen. Kudos to West/North technology education teacher Fred Schroedl for his hard work in making this reality. Enjoy the montage video below:

Presidential Scholars - The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

There are 3.5 Million High School Graduates in the U.S this year.

Only 4,000 are candidates who qualify for being considered a Presidential Scholar.

Cameron Chyla and Rachel Ward from West are 2 of 80 students to be considered in Wisconsin and the only students from Waukesha.  Congrats on this amazing academic accomplishment!

A New Blog Segment "Purpose Corner" - I will be adding a weekly segment which will be in video form to describe our "purpose" or why we are focused this year at West on doing what we do. It is easier for me to describe and provide a personal touch than providing more narrative. Why did I name it "Purpose Corner"? I am not sure other than subliminally my two children like Winnie the Pooh who hails rom "Pooh Corner"?.....

African-American History Month: Today for African American History Month we have a question for you from a poem.  Can you name the writer who wrote the following famous lines?

“You may write me down in history,
with your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod in the very dirt,
but still like dust I’ll rise.
Just like moons and like suns,
with the certainty of tides,
just like hopes spring high
Still I rise, still I rise, still I rise....”

For any of the questions that are posed during African American History Month, please put your name (students only) with the correct answer to our question in the WAD box that is waiting for you by Ms. Brown near the front doors to the school.  (Brought to you by WAD)

February 6th Weekly Blog

"Beardmania!!" - During last weeks blog I shared the final amount that was raised for our "Beard for Change" challenge. I would like to personally thank the West parent who so graciously came to me and stated they want to provide us with some funding to round up the donation to $5,000!!! Thank you again for your amazing donation to support West's efforts and ultimately to support youth in the city of Milwaukee. We invited all major news outlets to join in the shaving and man did they ever show up! All four major Milwaukee area channels showed up to do a story on the reason for the beard challenge which was ultimately to think outside of our community and to give back to the youth of the city of Milwaukee, especially after the polarizing events and following devastation that occurred in the Sherman Park neighborhood this past summer. The positive spotlight has been on West High School and once again deserved for the donations given to this reason. Our public relations department has data that the story aired over twenty times in some capacity among the major networks. Also it has gone viral as a Facebook video of the event has over 225,000 views an growing! Finally the positivity reaches farther than you think......below is an email I received from a former West student, please enjoy that along with links to the network news stories!

Good Afternoon,
I hope your second semester is starting off strong! I just wanted to let you know what positive remarks are being made about our very own high school, two and half hours away! I have had one professor show a video about what you guys did. We talked about what one group of people can come together and do for a "change" and it ended up- turning into a huge discussion and I just sat back and listened and at the very end I raised my hand and told the class that it was the high school I came from and everyone was amazed. I also had two people from my building come and knock on my door, and they were like oh my gosh I just saw this video on Facebook, isn't this where you are from!! Things like this make me miss being at West even more. Just wanted to share the positive news that we are hearing all the way up north in Wisconsin! Have a great week.

African American History Month - (This message/question is courtesy of the West WAD "We Are Diverse" club) Most of us have heard of Rosa Parks and her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger in Montgomery in 1955.  But long before Rosa there was a another woman forcibly removed from a train en route from Memphis to Nashville in the 1880’s, when she refused to move to the colored section. Then after the lynching of three Memphis friends, this woman became one of the nation’s most vocal anti-lynching activists.  She traveled throughout the South investigating, writing and speaking out about the crime of lynching.  This courageous woman committed her life to leading a campaign against the cruelty of the crime of lynching.  Can you name this famous African American woman?

TREK - We have just finished the first semester of TREK which is a Waukesha West personalized learning option for elective credit. Our kids do amazing things everyday and when they have a voice and some choice to take on something they have passion about, they initiate authentic learning. As we look to provide opportunities for students to explore areas and careers, please check out if TREK would be of interest to you by accessing the video link...... TREK Promotional Video
