May 20th Weekly Blog

Final Blog Post of 2018-2019!! - I cannot believe another year has come and gone... it went so fast! With Memorial Day coming up and my focus on graduation and wrapping up the school year, this will be the last blog post of this year. I look to be back in September 2019 for continuing to use this format to provide information and celebrate the great things happening at West High School....thanks to all staff, parents, and students for another great year!!

Finishing the year strong!! - West teacher work through a cycle of inquiry in groups each semester. The tweet below says it all when it comes to staff having a choice to grow in an area and the collaborative nature of their share out with other staff that is data-driven and focused on impacting student achievement! We will look to follow the same process again next year with some minor tweaks...what a year!!

Finals Week Expectations - Finals begin on Wednesday, June 5th and ends on Friday, June 7th. I want to be clear that we have 180 school days, and our last week of school is equally as important as the first day and all days in between.  As is the case during finals week and our last day of school on Monday, June 10th (snow make-up day), all students are expected to be present for every class hour of each day including study halls. There are no special releases granted because it is the last week. The last day of school is no different. Students are expected to be at all classes and receive feedback from their teachers around their work for the year, prior to a long summer break. I thank you for supporting our expectations as we maximize learning every day of school.

Westaurant - Westaurant is a restaurant run by the Waukesha West "Chef Foods" classes.  They will be serving lunch on Wednesday, May 22.  Students have created some original recipe ideas and will be serving them.  Please remember to send cash with your students on Wednesday, May 22 if they are interested in supporting the Westaurant! The menu is below:

Graduation Information - Graduation day for the all three Waukesha legacy high schools will be Saturday, June 8th, 2019. Waukesha West High School will be holding graduation ceremonies in the West Fieldhouse on this date beginning at 2:00 P.M. As we are one community divided into three high schools, graduation times among all three high schools are staggered per usual to enable friends and family to attend multiple ceremonies if they so choose. South High School ceremonies will begin at 10:00 A.M. and North High School ceremonies will begin at 12:00 P.M. on this date.

Comeback Player of The Year - For those of you who have not heard the story, Senior David Skogman was awarded Comeback Player of The Year at the Journal Sentinal High School Sports Award. David's heart stopped beating for approximately 4 minutes as he was playing basketball this past summer after collapsing on the court. He has used his comeback from this event in true leader fashion by overcoming it and encouraging others to always do what is right because you should never take an opportunity for granted. Cool pic of David and Michael Phelps who won 28 Olympics medals with 23 of them Gold medals which are both Olympic records making him the most decorated American Olympian ever.

Inaugural West Auto Show!! - Please consider coming to join the first-ever Waukesha West Auto Show! Please see the flyer below for information. Would love to see community members, students and parents attend!! This is a community event.

Important School Fees!! - For the past few months, I have included a blurb about school fees in this blog and the importance of utilizing our Infinite Campus system for checking fees and grades. With graduation coming up I want to remind all Seniors that not paying past or current fees could result in not walking for graduation. We want to do all we can as a school to work with families to avoid any loss of privilege because of unpaid fees so please pay your fees or reach out to Kirsten Ellsworth my Administrative Assistant to ask questions regarding your circumstance. For all other students, please do the same so you do not accumulate fees and end up in a difficult situation as a Senior. Infinite Campus is also a resource to check on student progress...please utilize this system to stay engaged with the academics of your child.

Waukesha Education Foundation (WEF) - The Waukesha Education Foundation has been supporting students in the school district of Waukesha for many years. The WEF raises money and grants that money through their application process to teachers looking to enhance student learning. In my ten years in the school district, I have seen the impact of the WEF directly within our classrooms. The WEF wants to fill every grant request and is always looking to take strides to improve its funding for grants. Please check out their website here to see some of the ways they are looking to increase the funding for grant requests. They have their annual golf outing this summer that I am looking forward to participating in, please see the information below and consider supporting the WEF as they do great things for kids in our schools!!! The WEF Executive Director Lynnette Kalmadge is available to connect with you about golf outing registration and any questions regarding the WEF. Her contact is execdirector@waukesha.k12.wi.us

May 6th Weekly Blog

Teacher Appreciation Week!! - I have the distinct pleasure to be able to observe our teaching staff on a daily basis. I am always impressed with their hard work and dedication to our students. It is common for the West administrative team to compare the teaching profession to that of a brain surgeon in that on a daily basis an average of 150 students per teacher come to them with variables of health, safety, stress, anxiety, apathy, exuberance, joy, sorrow, success and failure that affect how they learn during any given hour of any day and that their job is to navigate these variables to ensure student success! I do not know of any individuals more dedicated to this than the staff at Waukesha West, thank you for all you do for our students!!

Graduation Information - This has been buried in my blog for the past couple of months, but because we are only a little more than a month away from graduation I wanted to make it front and center:

Graduation day for the all three Waukesha legacy high schools will be Saturday, June 8th, 2019. Please begin informing friends and family who will be attending.

Dance Expectations - This weekend is the Waukesha West prom. The grand march is in the West field house beginning at 4:00 P.M. The doors for the dinner and dance will open at 6:00 P.M. and the dance ends at 11:00 P.M. Below is a video reminder around dance expectations:

Booster Club Thanks - Our Booster Club works hard to support our student/athletes. They spent lots of volunteer hours to boost the culture of our programs. I wanted to recognize some of those volunteers who worked concessions this past weekend. I know it happens often, but they were an example of how people go above and beyond for our students by working long hours on behalf of our students. Thank you, it is appreciated.

West Robotics Students - Core 2062 finished the year on a high note by competing in the FIRST World Championships in Detroit this past April 27th with a quarterfinal loss. I want to recognize West student Nathan Andrus for this accomplishment as part of the district's robotics team Core 2062.

CORE 2062

I also want to recognize West student Everen Wegner as he was part of FIRST Robotics Team 930 that took 2nd place in the FIRST World Championship! Congrats Everen on this accomplishment!

State Solo Ensemble - On the weekend of April 27th West students had State Solo Ensemble at UW-Whitewater. At this competition there are various sites where students perform. Each site nominates two of its best to win an Exemplary Award. In the end, only one individual (or group) is picked to actually win the award. This year, the music department at West had eight nominations and four winners. Congrats to the nominees and winners listed below:
