April 29th Weekly Blog

Graduation Information - This has been buried in my blog for the past couple of months, but because we are only a little more than a month away from graduation I wanted to make it front and center:

Graduation day for the all three Waukesha legacy high schools will be Saturday, June 8th, 2019. Waukesha West High School will be holding graduation ceremonies in the West Fieldhouse on this date beginning at 2:00 P.M. As we are one community divided into three high schools, graduation times among all three high schools are staggered per usual to enable friends and family to attend multiple ceremonies if they so choose. South High School ceremonies will begin at 10:00 A.M. and North High School ceremonies will begin at 12:00 P.M. on this date. Please begin informing friends and family who will be attending.

A great story... - CBS 58 produced an outstanding feature story for their Sunday Morning Spotlight on West High School student Luis Gutierrez and him growing up in a house with parents who are deaf and hard of hearing. This story aired this past Sunday and is just plain cool for all involved.....

Dress Code Reminders - Once again, I want to remind students about our dress code policy. Our school has a dress code under the same premise that any business/workplace etc. will have a dress code. Below is the narrative from our "Student Handbook" on Dress & grooming expectations.

Dress and Grooming
Student attire must be respectful of others and appropriate for the educational setting at West High School. Clothing that causes a distraction or disruption in the school or creates a health or safety risk is deemed inappropriate for student dress.
  • The following dress is not allowed as it may disrupt the educational setting:
  • No bare midriffs.
  • No strapless tops, or low cut tops.
  • Appropriate length shorts and skirts are expected.  Appropriateness will be determined on a case-by-case basis through the office.
  • No visible boxer shorts with loose, low pants.
  • No hats, bandanas, hoodies, or other headwear (ethnic or religious headwear is acceptable) may be worn during the school day.
    • Students are expected to remove headwear upon entering the building and during the school day.
  • No coats, jackets, or outerwear is allowed. These must be stored in the
          student’s locker.
  • Clothing that has lettering, advertisement of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, weapons, or designs considered in poor taste
  • Backpacks are not allowed during the school day; they must remain in the assigned student locker.
School administrators will make the final decision as to what constitutes appropriate school wear. At the discretion of an associate principal, parents may be called to bring a change of appropriate clothing or student may be sent home. Students who violate the foregoing rules will not be admitted to class and may be suspended from school. See School Board Policy 5511- Dress and Grooming.

Apprenticeship Signing Day - West High School and the School District of Waukesha have so many options for students to pursue. I believe that the diversity of offerings we have for students to choose from and learn about make our district the best in the State of Wisconsin. We want to continue to celebrate the different paths our students may take, that they can be prepared for in our school and district. It started with our first ever signing day for an apprenticeship between student Hunter Heaney and Tri-North Builders. Hunter is currently a dual-enrollment student at WCTC where he has classes at West and then goes to WCTC to take college classes focused on his apprenticeship training in the afternoon. Companies seek to hire students from the program and continue to support them in training as they begin work in the field while getting paid, a great opportunity!! See the tweet below that says it all and thanks to district CTE Coordinator Mollie Haubenschild for making this event happen to celebrate our student's success!

West Forensics - Twelve members of the West Forensics team participated in the State Forensics Festival held this past weekend at UW Madison. Congratulations to gold medal winners Brennan Kocovsky, Ellie Shelley-Bregantini, and Morgan Roberts! Congratulations to everyone on the team for a great season!

Robotics Team CORE 2062 - The Waukesha School District High School robotics team CORE 2062 (Community of Robotics Engineers) was awarded a most prestigious award, the Regional Chairman’s Award at the Midwest FIRST Robotics Competition recently held in Chicago, IL.  This award recognizes a top team’s accomplishments over a five year period.  Many criteria are taken into account, such as STEM outreach events, community involvement, and our top-notch safety program. The description of the award from FIRST is:

“The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.”
All of the mentors on the team and the West community are proud of all of the students we have and are impressed by all that has been accomplished through their hard work and dedication. With this award, the team will be competing at the FIRST Championship in Detroit, MI on April 24th-27th Way to go CORE 2062!!

April 8th Weekly Blog (Tuesday Edition)

Senior Vs. Staff Basketball Game - The game was Friday, March 22nd. In my previous blog posts, I shared some training pictures as I predicted that my hard work would pay off and we would once again beat the Seniors. Well, call me Nostradamus, because once again the West faculty took down the Seniors!! My MVP vote was for Mr. Berish who attempted an under the leg type move on a fast break that went terribly wrong. He gets the vote because he tried, it was fun to watch the failure, and he did not get hurt. My final post on this ends with me holding up the championship trophy... until next year Seniors (who are currently Juniors)!! I am 78% sure this is me after the game donning my Waukesha Celtics warm-up top and my Waukesha East-side all-star shorts. My hair is simply amazing.

West Talent Show - This is one of the best events that take place at West High School. I have enjoyed the talents of our students when this show has been put on. Please sign up and try out as we want to see students shine! See the information below:

Let's put on a great show, West!

Ignition Mentors 2019-2020 - Did you know that West High School has the best peer mentoring program in the state of Wisconsin and I would contest it is the best in the entire nation. Every year the program says goodbye to Seniors and welcomes the opportunity for new faces from students in any grade level. We had around 100 mentors get trained this year during their "train" day as they begin the process of preparing the activities for our incoming Freshmen students for the 2019-2020 school year. This is one of the many outstanding leadership opportunities we have for students at West High School. Please enjoy the pictures as they learn team building activities that improve their leadership capacity while practicing the implementation of these activities for when Freshmen come in for theirAll-Freshman day in the summer! The teams have to build the tallest balloon tower while tied together at the wrist with limited time and adhesive material... it was fun to watch.

AVID Elective - West High School is in its first year of AVID implementation. We have two components, one of them is AVID schoolwide and the other is the AVID elective. This year we have one section of about 24 sophomore students who are in the AVID elective. Next year we are adding two more AVID elective classes so we will have an elective class for 9th, 10th and 11th-grade students for next year. That process is being finalized as we recently invited our current 9th-grade students who have been chosen for the AVID elective for next year, to collaborate with our current AVID elective students to ask questions and learn the ropes while signing their commitment contracts and having cake. Excited to see our currently AVID students leading our future program members!
