October 31st Weekly Blog

College and Career Fair!! -
SDW College and Career Fair is a huge opportunity for students and families to meet one on one with representatives from in-state and out of state colleges and universities in addition to career professionals from a plethora of careers. Every student in the School District of Waukesha, grades 6-12, and their parents are invited! Whether students are interested in career exploration or meeting one on one with the representatives, the opportunities are endless for the relationships that can be built at this inaugural event. In addition, financial aid assistance, scholarship tutorials, college admissions essay writing tutorials, and more are available in both English and Spanish. Food and door prizes are also available! Every student who attends will receive a free meal by completing the College and Career passport handout.

HEROIN Follow Up -
A visual backdrop of nearly 200 pairs of shoes belonging to teenagers who have passed away from drug overdoses set the tone for “Stairway to Heroin,” a program at South High school that offered raw dialogue and chilling statistics about the dangers of prescription painkillers. Remember FOUR pairs of those shoes minimum belong to former WEST students. Opiate drug overdoses have now surpassed car crashes as the leading cause of death in Waukesha County, and the source of the drug is often in our medicine cabinets. The message? Keep your prescription drugs locked up.

Jarred Kelenic - Jarred is a thankful and humble young man who has appreciated what others have done to support him as he journeys along an athletic path that few individuals ever get to take. Waukesha West is proud of Jarred for his accomplishments but is more proud of his character as he represents his community and our school around the world. Congratulations Jarred on a great showing for USA baseball! Waukesha Now Kelenic Article

Academic Decathlon - The first Academic Decathlon event for the 2016-17 competition season is just around the corner. On Tuesday, November 8, Acadec team members will participate in a local competition. Please find out who individuals team members are and come out and support them at their competition! West students, thanks for your ongoing support and we wish Academic Decathlon good luck!

Girls Cross Country - Congratulations to the Waukesha West Girls Cross Country team on their 4th place finish in Division 1 at the State meet this past Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids. It was great weather for the race and our girls ran their hearts out. Thanks for a great season which included a Classic Eight conference championship and a 4th place finish at state!

Boys Soccer - Way to go West boys Soccer as you head to the state tournament! The boys will be playing in the state semi-final game Friday night November 4th at 7:00 P.M. against Whitefish Bay at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. Boys Soccer Going to State Article Football Playoffs - Our Football team won its level 2 playoff game handily against Watertown this past Friday. The team will host Monona Grove for the Level 3 playoff game at West High School also this Friday night November 4th at 7:00 P.M. Super Fans are going to have to divide and conquer to support both programs...which is a good problem to have! West Football Playoff Article

Boys Volleyball - The boys volleyball team ended its season this past Friday by dropping the fifth set of the night to Madison La Follette High School 15-13. Congrats to the boys on a solid season and an exciting match against La Follette! I want to give a shout out to our Super Fans who spread the love and came in to support the boys volleyball team from the football game. I know the energy and excitement was electric as 200 plus stormed the gym in support! The Super Fan support was amazing to see and appreciated!

Beard for Change - As a teaching staff we are fortunate to work with groups of students who look to support their schools and local community. So many of our student groups volunteer time and raise funds for giving to organizations that will maximize the funding for high quality impact in the lives of our community members. Well....students rub off on teachers as well and currently we are providing an opportunity for students to support us if they would like for a great cause to positively impact our greater area community. Please click on the link for the Beard For Change Flyer as several staff look for your support to grow some sweet beardage...or shave it for a great cause...... See Mr. Brennan, Mr. Patt, Mr. Jenna, Mr. LeMieux, Mr. Harttert, Mr. Kwasinski, Mr. Grams, Mr. Hannon, Mr. Willis, Mr. Mueller, Mr. Egnarski, Mr. Spoerk, Mr. Wisniewski, Mr. Huemmer, or Mr. Foley for more info! Thank you from the beard club for any and all support given for our lofty goal!

October 24th Weekly Blog

HeroinI have had the pleasure of working with the phenomenal students of West High School for over 7 years and have enjoyed every moment.....however with that joy comes heart break. In education we get to experience the "up's" with our students and their families, but for the many "up's", there are also some "downs" and over the past year part of those "downs" have included a minimum of FOUR West graduates we have lost to confirmed heroin overdoses.... with the oldest former student being a mere 23 years of age. As a community the more we are informed of this epidemic, the more we can do to limit its negative impact among our youth.....please consider the information below....

Below is information about an upcoming important event, Stairway to HeroinOctober 25 at South High School.  These events have been held throughout the area for a few years.  They are usually highly attended, and we are hoping for a VERY large turnout.  We will have a live feed into the library with an interpreter for Spanish speaking families.  The heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic is very real, and we need to work as an entire community to address it.  Prevention is hard to measure, but according to SAMHSA and MetLife, "kids who learn about the dangers of prescription drug abuse from their parents were significantly less likely to use substances than those who did not."  We are providing an opportunity for community learning. Please access this link for more information.

Congratulations! ... to the West Girls Cross Country team as they won the Classic 8 Conference Championship on Saturday October 15th. In a truly amazing feat West swept the championships by winning the Varsity, JV and Freshmen girls races. This is West’s 16th girls cross country conference championship since the school opened 24 years ago......amazing! Thank you for your hard work and dedication this season which culminated with a championship. The girls had a great showing at the Mukwanago sectional meet this past Saturday October 22nd as they were first place Sectional champs! They will be running again at the state meet this coming Saturday October 29th @ 3:05 P.M. in Wisconsin Rapids for a State Championship.....best of luck girls!

Congrats to the Boys soccer regional champs! They will be playing this Thursday October 27th beginning at 7:00 P.M. in the West stadium for a chance to advance to the sectional final on Saturday, October 29th.

Come check it out: Boys Volleyball regional game this Friday, October 28th @ 7:00 P.M. in the West Field House and feel free to provide double support by walking out to our stadium and following up with our Varsity football team as they take on Watertown also @ 7:00 P.M. Friday in level 2 of the state playoffs.

Come check it out: Girls Swim sectional meet this Saturday 2:00 at South which provides students with multiple options this week to come and see any of our great athletic programs. Check out the Athletics and Activities Website linked below for more information.

The ODD CoupleCongratulations to Nate Berish and all of the Westend players for a great show and performance.  Your hard work and creative leadership rocks in pulling off this hilarious comedy...thank you!

October 17th Weekly Blog

I want to start off by talking about the Waukesha community and how proud I am to be a member of it. My family and I reside in the community and were amazed at the response of community members young and old to get involved with the search for young Andrew. Thankfully the outcome was the best case scenario and I want to specifically recognize all of the staff and students at West for their dedication and commitment to help find Andrew....Thank You!

The Cadets of Waukesha West are 2016 WSMA Quad A State Champions! .... along with Oak Creek High School they tied for first place at this year's State Marching Band Championships in Class Quad A.  This has only happened once in the past 30 years, and never in Class Quad A. Also West won the caption award for Best Color Guard at this year's event! Our Color Guard received not only the highest score in our class Quad A, but also the highest score out of all 32 bands that competed... a remarkable achievement! Congratulations to all staff, students, and parents involved to make this happen, your hard work has dedication is amazing! Please follow this link to enjoy the state championship performance!

October 3rd Weekly Blog

The week in review: We had a great Homecoming week full of school spirit culminating with our powder puff finals in the rain (Seniors were Champions!), pep rally, Wall of Fame Induction, varsity football game and Homecoming dance. Our pep rally (video link to drum line kicking it off!) showcased our fall athletic teams, cheer squad, pom and dance team, marching band, spirit competition, teacher strength (we won the tug of war!) and Wall of Fame inductees. The two inductees were Anna Peterson and Matt Esche. Anna was not able to attend but Matt made arrangements to be in attendance despite lots of drive time and a short time spent with us. He was able to address our students at the rally. Their full induction bios are below and linked are videos of them discussing their induction.

ANNA PETERSEN
A 2003 graduate of Waukesha West, Anna Petersen distinguished herself in the performing arts long before her professional career began. While at West High School, Anna was recognized as one of the “Stars of Tomorrow” by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. She performed in honors ensembles including the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and the WSMA State Honors Orchestra. Upon graduation, Anna attended the Eastman School of Music in New York where she attained her degree and a coveted distinguished performer’s certificate. Anna has since held oboe performance positions with the Rochester Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony; she has presented oboe performance master classes in both the United States and Canada, and she has performed full-time with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Ontario. With pride and enthusiasm, we recognize Anna’s dedication, talent, and relentless passion for growing and sharing the gift of music.

MATT ESCHE
A member of the graduating class of 2001, Matt Esche’s legacy as an exemplary student-athlete began the moment he became a Wolverine.  From his freshman cross-country season to his final race as a senior member of the track & field team, Matt inspired his teammates while rewriting the West distance record books, including school record times in the 3,200 meter run and the cross-country 5K.  As a driven competitor who prompted those working with him to pursue and attain higher personal goals, Matt continued to set records at the University of Iowa where he was a two-time All-Midwest Region athlete and holds the school record for the 10K.  Upon graduating with degrees in English and Health & Sports, Matt continued in his pattern of lifting others to greater heights by embarking upon a career in coaching at the NCAA Division I level.  His encouragement of and guidance for collegiate athletes is evidenced by the wake of personal records and team championships that he has influenced through every step of his coaching career.  A gifted athlete and true leader, Matt Esche has distinguished himself by motivating others to accomplish more than they could have imagined.

Our football team lost to an excellent Catholic Memorial team on Friday night in front of a great crowd of students cheering them on. They look to get back on track this week. Our Homecoming formal dance showcased students in their finest attire with all the beauty, elegance, and chivalry one would expect. Our field house decorations made you feel like you were in the land of Oz, students were on their best behavior. Our marching band competed on Sunday at West Allis Hale and placed 1st in Class AAAA with a score of 80.9...Congratulations Cadets1

Finally, a big thanks to Sue Purpi and Kelly Bratz for their work during this homecoming week as they were in the mix of helping with the organization of all the activities. There are many others who contributed to the success of the week and thanks to all!
