October 17th Weekly Blog

I want to start off by talking about the Waukesha community and how proud I am to be a member of it. My family and I reside in the community and were amazed at the response of community members young and old to get involved with the search for young Andrew. Thankfully the outcome was the best case scenario and I want to specifically recognize all of the staff and students at West for their dedication and commitment to help find Andrew....Thank You!

The Cadets of Waukesha West are 2016 WSMA Quad A State Champions! .... along with Oak Creek High School they tied for first place at this year's State Marching Band Championships in Class Quad A.  This has only happened once in the past 30 years, and never in Class Quad A. Also West won the caption award for Best Color Guard at this year's event! Our Color Guard received not only the highest score in our class Quad A, but also the highest score out of all 32 bands that competed... a remarkable achievement! Congratulations to all staff, students, and parents involved to make this happen, your hard work has dedication is amazing! Please follow this link to enjoy the state championship performance!

A reminder that we have parent teacher conferences, Tuesday October 18th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Waukesha West High School. Teachers will be available in their classrooms. Parents and students are responsible for accessing schedules as they will not be printed or provided by West. Please prepare to limit your conference time to 5 minutes per teacher. If more time is necessary, please connect with teachers directly outside of conference time to meet as needed.

This Wednesday morning October 19th is our first “Coffee With The Principal” meeting. It will be held from 7:15 - 8:05 A.M in room E122 which is located in our media center. All parents and students are invited for some coffee and cookies to talk about any topic with me and members of our administrative team.  I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Wednesday evening October 19th from 6-7:30 P.M. the West Principal Advisory Council will be meeting. All grade levels have two representatives in attendance. Please access the Principal October 3rd blog to find out names and contact information for individuals on the council. They will bring questions you may have to the group. We will share out the minutes of the meeting upon completion.

Attached is information about an upcoming important event, Stairway to HeroinOctober 25 at South High School.  These events have been held throughout the area for a few years.  They are usually highly attended, and we are hoping for a VERY large turnout.  We will have a live feed into the library with an interpreter for Spanish speaking families.  The heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic is very real, and we need to work as an entire community to address it.  Prevention is hard to measure, but according to SAMHSA and MetLife, "kids who learn about the dangers of prescription drug abuse from their parents were significantly less likely to use substances than those who did not."  We are providing an opportunity for community learning. Please access this link for more information.

Congratulations to our football team as they have qualified for the state playoffs again and finished the season in sole possession of 2nd place in the tough Classic 8 Conference! The first playoff game is this Friday night at home against Stoughton beginning at 7:00 P.M.
