May 22nd Weekly Blog (Tuesday Edition)

Final Blog Post of 2016-2017! - With Memorial Day next week and my focus on graduation and wrapping up the school year, this will be the last blog post of this year. I look to be back in late August or early September for continuing to use this format to provide information and celebrate the great things happening at West High School....thanks to all parents and students for a great year!!

Finals Week Expectations - The email below that was sent to students and families provides information for all 9, 10 and 11 grade students regarding for our finals week expectations:

The finals schedule has been sent out to all students, posted on the principals blog and is available on our schools website. It is the same schedule we ran during our first semester final exams and is simple to follow. Finals begin on Monday June 5th and end on Wednesday June 7th. I changed the schedule this year as compared to previous year for Seniors so they could enjoy their last day of school at West. What that means is that the schedule on our last day of school, Thursday June 8th is a Monday schedule where students in grade 9,10 &11 will attend all eight classes. I want to be clear that we have 180 school days, and our last day of school is equally as important as the first day and all days in between.  As is the case during finals week, all students are expected to be present for every class hour of each day including study halls. Their are no special releases granted because it is the last week. The last day of school is no different. Students are expected to be at all classes and receive feedback from their teachers around their work for the year, prior to a long summer break. I thank you for supporting our expectations as we maximize learning everyday of school. Please see me with any questions. Thank you

Finals Schedule - Below is our exam schedule for the  final week of the school year:

Purpose Corner - Please enjoy the video which discusses "Pineapple Charts" and our final gallery walk showcase to culminate our PLC work for this school year!

Congratulations Mrs. Patty Corrao! - Interact ...Over the 2016-2017 school year, you and your board grew the club to well over 100 members and filled a very busy schedule with either a board meeting or a club meeting each and every week.  The club’s activities this past year have included the following:

  • In a “Random acts of kindness” day, over 30 random acts of kindness were logged around Waukesha by members wearing Interact tee-shirts.
  • In an ongoing project, your members assembled over 500 introductory packets for Wheaton Franciscan Hospice.
  • Your club generated approximately 5,000 Letters to Santa for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, resulting in donations of $5,000 dollars to that charity.
  • Your members donated over 225 Holiday ornaments to Interfaith Senior Programs in Waukesha.
  • Your members held a Rummage sale for Retzer nature center that raised over $1,200 dollars.
  • You finished out the year with a Dodgeball tournament that raised almost $380 for West Woods, a nature preserve on the grounds of Waukesha West and built 4 duck houses for that preserve.
  • The club was admitted to the Adopt-a-Highway program, being granted stewardship of two miles on HWY I from Oakdale to 164.
Your club members also volunteered at numerous community events including Operation Honor for Veterans, the Christmas Clearing House, the Waukesha Christmas Parade, Summit View Elementary’s Students with Special Needs meet Santa event, Waukesha Janboree, Special Olympics basketball and swim, Rotary Pancake Breakfast, Rose Glen Chicken Barbeque, and the Prairie Puma Palooza. I asked some of your students to share what they appreciated about you, and got a list of dozens and dozens of examples of you gladly giving your time, your resources and your personal engagement, in support of them and their development in Interact and beyond. It is simply too long to read in this address, but serves as a rock-solid indication that you are a fitting recipient of this award.

As our club’s liaison to yours, it has been a joy to work with you. It has been a relief to see the revival of a club that means so much to us. It has been exciting to see the kids so involved with such successful community service projects. And it has been inspiring to see you lead them in a way that we are sure will shape their lives far beyond their time at Waukesha West High School. We all, therefore, wish to humbly recognize you for the amazing work that you do, with the 2017 Waukesha Rotary Club Community Service Award, which reads as follows:
In expression of our appreciation to Patty Corrao for her exemplary representation of the founding Rotary principle of “Service Above Self” to the community at Waukesha West High School, and in lasting effect through them, to the world beyond.

Thank you, Patty Corrao and all students for your service above self.

May 15th Weekly Blog

Prom.... was outstanding!! - I am so very proud of our students and how they represented themselves, their families, their community and their school at this past Saturday's 2017 prom. We have battled with differences in our student dance culture compared to school expectations these past couple of years. What I saw Saturday were students actually dancing with their dates!!! They were face to face and swinging around for hours on end, and it was enjoyable to watch and based on student feed back...enjoyable to be a part of. It is no secret that as an administrative team we police our students hard at dances. Last years prom resulted in around thirty students being asked to leave early because of inappropriate dancing with over sixty warnings issued. This year we had between six and eight warnings given and we asked only six students to leave early because of their dancing. That is a huge shift to be proud of as a student body! So the formula is face to face real dancing with your date minus (-) grinding = most fun prom ever! Thank you again students as you were outstanding!

West Forensics at State - We have so many amazing programs that perform well and represent West High School at the highest level. Back in late April our Forensics team dominated the state competition. Coach Amy Koszarek stated "I'm really proud of these students. 9 gold medals (perfect scores) and 7 silver medals at State!"

Ecuador/Galapagos Island Service Trip - During our Spring break we had a group of students and teachers travel to Ecuador and the Galapagos on a service trip to help in the impoverished Andes mountain villages. They had an eventful trip of which I have blogged before, but please enjoy the pictures below....notice the 120 year old tortoise in one of the pictures!

May 8th Weekly Blog

Teacher Appreciation Week! - Last week we celebrated our staff at West and the amazing work they do with our young people. They work hard to meet the demands of so many people to see success in their students....please tell them how much you appreciate their efforts when you see them. We celebrate our staff through students giving shout outs to their teacher to show appreciation. Please enjoy some of the things our kids said about their teachers this year at West:

Ever since I took her class I have been nothing but positive and happy. She has made my life so much better because she always puts a smile on my face in class and I have changed my outlook on life. I also handle situations so much better!

Mr. **** is easily my favorite teacher at west. There is no one else I would rather have teach one of the most rigorous courses the school has to offer. Seriously makes the class enjoyable while holding students to a high standard. If ever there was a model for how to be as a person and how to teach it would be Mr.****. It is clear that he truly enjoys helping people whether it is one on one or holding Saturday study sessions for AP ****in order to make sure we have the tools we need to pass the AP test. Thank you!

Ms. **** everyday goes out of her way to connect with all her students. I look forward to seeing her everyday and her classes are my favorites, not just because they're fun classes in general but because she makes them fun. She starts conversation with me almost everyday, and cares about the feelings and social and home lives of her students. She's not just a teacher but she's also like a counselor in ways because she makes you comfortable and she's trusting. The amount of care that she shows for hear students is the most I've ever seen from a teacher!

I love the way my teacher encourages her students through her kind words! This teacher goes above and beyond to make sure her students succeed in her classroom and I'm so blessed to have a wonderful person like her as my teacher and a life long role model!

She was always so encouraging and really made sure you felt confident about your work. The class was a lot of work but it's worth it because she's the best teacher I had. The best days were when we came into class and she would ask us what she should do that weekend with her kids. She made you feel like a young adult and not a little kid. She is very approachable and understanding, but she won't let you slack off. She had a variety of activities to help you learn so it wasn't the same thing everyday, she really cares about her students.

Wolverine Giveback - Continued this week, individual Advisory classes came up with their individual projects for giving back to the community. The students in this advisory group put together an amazing kit bag for male or female needy individuals. It was fun for our staff  to watch them coordinate and work together!

Coffee with the Principal - A reminder that this Wednesday morning May 3rd will be the final "Coffee with the Principal" for this school year. Please come and join me for some coffee and conversation about all things West. We will meet from 7:15 to 8:00 A.M. in our Student Services conference room. We have changed locations for this meeting to Students Services from our usual spot in the media center due to AP testing. As you walk into the main entrance of our building Student Services is the office on the left. As you walk into Student Services the conference room will be the first door on the right side of the office. I hope to see you there!

Veterans Oral History Project - I would like to give a special thank you to Kaleena Montez, Luke Dykowski and Nick Portz for taking the opportunity to interview World War II veterans at St. John's Military Academy for the Veterans Oral History Project. In a nutshell it is a project where veterans can tell their stories and the conversation is recorded and archived at the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C. Our students had to prepare questions and prompt the veterans for engaging in thirty minutes of fruitful dialogue. Kaleena, Luke and Nick did an outstanding job! The power of the veterans stories of what they went through is nothing short of amazing. I was thankful to be present for two of the interviews and was in awe of the resolve these veterans showed, brought to tears on a few occasions and amazed at their detailed memories of their experiences. Thank you to all military currently serving in our armed forces and all veterans who have given so much!

Link to Veterans Oral Project

Vietnam Veterans - Some of the best ways for our students to learn is through tactile experience and visual representations. I want to recognize Mr. James Jobb for bringing in a group of Vietnam veterans who spend their time educating high school students about their experience. Please note that the pictures below show students with weapons that are not functioning and school policy was tightly adhered to in order that all students were safe and could enjoy some authentic tactile experiences.

CORE Robotics 2062 - The School District of Waukesha’s high school robotics team, CORE 2062, competed over the weekend in the 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition’s World Championship at the America’s Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. CORE was placed in the Daly division and earned a record of eight wins and eight losses, being picked into the seventh seed alliance and being eliminated in the tiebreaker match of the semifinals.
CORE 2062 had an amazing season this year. At world's we were able to become a first pick in alliance selection for the first time in CORE history, advance to the semifinals of our division until losing by only two gears, and were able to reach every team with our extensive safety program. We were also able to expand the horizon of our team as many members attended conferences, the innovation fair, and scholarship row. We finished out the weekend watching Team 1986, who we won the Lacrosse regional with, finish second place, only losing to the winning alliance from our division.,” says Thomas Durnil, the Student Engineering Project Manager of the team.
Overall this year, CORE competed in the Wisconsin Regional in Milwaukee, the Seven Rivers Regional in La Crosse, and the World Championship in Saint Louis, winning the Innovation in Control award in Milwaukee and La Crosse and gaining a seasonal record of 32 wins and 15 Losses.
CORE 2062 has been the School District of Waukesha’s robotics team for 11 years, and this is their eleventh time competing in this tournament. They have won this tournament twice before. Congratulations on an amazing run and a competitive year!

Interact and West Woods - The Interact "Adopt A Highway" sign went up this weekend. Please do not throw any garbage out your window from on Lawnsdale Road from Oakdale to Hwy 164.

Also Interact is working with many teacher and student volunteers on the "West Woods Project." Mr. Fred Jonas has spearheaded this along with Interact to clean up and create an accessible walking loop  on the Southwest corner of the West property along the corner of Saylesville and County H. Fundraising occurred this past week and thanks to all of those that raised $376 for the project through a West hosted dodgeball tournament. Great work!

Graduation 2017 Dates & Times: Graduation day for the all three Waukesha legacy high schools will be June 10th, 2017. Waukesha West High School will be holding graduation ceremonies in the West Fieldhouse on this date beginning at 2:00 P.M. South High School ceremonies will begin at 10:00 A.M. and North High School ceremonies will begin at 12:00 P.M. on this date. Please begin informing friends and family who will be attending.

Wolverine Giveback - Through our Advisory period, individual Advisory classes came up with their individual projects for giving back to the community. Some groups made sandwiches for those who are without a good meal while others took pride in their school grounds and cleaned up after a long winter. Either way our kids did an amazing job and I so proud of the work put into the "giveback" to the community! Thank you to the teachers who worked to provide ideas and leadership to get this done!
