April 20th Weekly Blog (COVID-19 Edition)

Weekly Video Update - This week I provide an update on the topics we are discussing as a multiple high school district given the recent announcement from Governor Evers that school buildings are closed for the remainder of the school year. Please note that the designated school year for the State of Wisconsin goes through June 30th. Topics are graduation, fees, schedule for the remainder of this year, student access to the building, scholarship night, yearbooks, and athletic/activity recognition.

Staff/Student Shout Outs! - I have referenced in previous videos this past month that we will continue to celebrate the great things happening at West, like our SOM (see below) and our Staff/Student positive appreciation for each other. Please see a couple of things that they had to say about each other here recently (note: modified to take out names):

Student to teacher... I truly enjoy going to your class each day. I enjoy the activities we do and how you genuinely want us all to succeed. Everything you do is very organized (including the transition to online classes) and easy to understand. You are always willing to give extra help whether it be on writing or understanding an activity. One of my favorite things about you is how at the end of the class you always remind us to be kind to one another. I think that this is a great reminder and something that we all should do everyday. Thank you for all you do for us!

Teacher to student... She has been participating and staying positive since day one of the West online experience. Her questions have been insightful and honest and she, in her assistance in helping me to navigate the Webex approach to teaching and learning, has been priceless. She reached out first and has been there all along. I sincerely want to thank her for this. She is an exceptional student and an outstanding individual.

Students of the Month (SOM) - Please enjoy the monthly showcase of students who have been recognized as a SOM. We posted our students for March today! Access the link here:

Parent Resource - Below is a one-page parent resource document that was shared via email last week. It may be useful for you in this stay-at-home environment. Here is the link to the official document.

West Virtual Talent Show - In the event we do not come back to school, or if we come back close to the talent show date, Mr. Jonas wants to have a virtual talent show for Waukesha West. I would be great practice if we do come back and students can perform as well. Mr. Jonas asks students to record and send a video of their talent to him directly via email at frjonas@waukesha.k12.wi.us for the purpose of creating a Youtube compilation for the West community to enjoy regardless of what the future entails. Remember that submission, means you consent to be on Youtube. Mr. Jonas is happy to support you with ideas if you are interested, so reach out to him if you prefer. Videos must be submitted by April 30th.

Kapco's Hero Mail Call - I do not normally showcase local companies in my blog but being that these are different times, I am having a different response, and forwarding you information that was sent to me for those interested. I now there are many opportunities that exist to do similar things, but this one came into my email today and thus is shared with you.

Waukesha West School:

Through the support of generous friends like you, Kapco has been truly honored to help lead a host of community endeavors including Kids2Kids Christmas, Camp Hometown Heroes, and many other efforts. During this time of isolation, we’re asking you to participate in a new program—Kapco’s Hero Mail Call—and write a letter, draw a picture or create a video to show our healthcare workers and senior citizens in nursing homes that we care.

Get involved TODAY! Write a letter. Draw a picture. Create a video.
Send to: Kapco’s Hero Mail Call, PO Box                                              1170, Grafton, WI 53024
                             Or email to: heromailcall@gmail.com

Once we receive the notes and letters, we will distribute them (observing best practice safety guidelines) to hundreds of locations and thousands of individuals.

If you have questions, please contact us at heromailcall@gmail.com. We also welcome your suggestions for facilities and locations (no individuals, please—groups only) who deserve these very special messages of hope and thanks.

Thanks for providing joy, comfort, and appreciation during a challenging time for all.

Attendance Procedure Update - During our time of virtual learning, it is still necessary to report absences in order to track illness symptoms as well as to notify teachers which students will not be logging into online learning.  The Safe Arrival system was turned off during virtual learning. While this system is off, please leave a message at 262-970-3916 with your student’s first and last name, grade, the symptoms they are experiencing or any other reason they will not be logging in. Please also indicate the time frame for which your student will be out.
