January 20th Weekly Blog (Tuesday Edition)

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2020 - Yesterday is the day we celebrate the life's work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King's message of equality and togetherness continues to inspire generations. Waukesha West students along with West Choir students and members of the Curtain family performed at an MLK Jr. Day event at WCTC. Our students have been attending and performing at this event for the past few years and always represent our school and community with an amazing spirit and energy! Enjoy the videos below of our students performing at the event.

Family Connect Conferences in February - We will be having one night of Family Connect (formerly known as Parent/Teacher) conferences at West High School on Wednesday, February 19th. Conferences will start at 4:00 P.M. and go until 7:30 P.M. We will be continuing on with our recent format for these conferences by having them as an appointment only with a focus on family connection. More information will be coming out about the sign-up process for our February, 19th conferences.

The One Conference 2020 - Yesterday the West High teaching staff along with all other teachers and administrators district-wide, attended the ONE Conference which is an internal conference for all SDW educators. West is happy to host this event which features a highly collaborative and engaging environment where educators this year focused on integrating creativity into their daily instruction for enhancing the student experience and increasing rigor. Many thanks to all of the district leaders who work hard to make this event run smooth and for our West staff who open their rooms to presenters. Our custodial staff does an amazing job of making the building look exceptional and are consistently patient to meet the needs of all in attendance....again a BIG thank you to all!

One Conference 2020 continued... - Wow! Please enjoy the work of the talented WHS students Neva Corp & Annabelle Imig. These two shared their time & talents on their day off to create a masterpiece! The wings were created with feathers that SDW staff shared their hopes, dreams, & inspiration for our students. Amazing work!

Surviving Semester Exams!!! - See the schedule for our semester one exam week below. It is also accessible through our school's website. Please access this link to see the Advisory lesson that was presented to West students to prepare for these exams.

Wish Week for TREK - From our TREK teachers Mike Mueller and Brandon Egnarski:

We'd like to say thank you for all of the support we had in running our "Wish Week" right before the holiday break. Between selling Mickey/Minnie Mouse Ears, Hot Chocolate, Cookies, Doughnuts, and a 50/50 raffle, we were able to raise $771 for Make-A-Wish child we sponsored. Also, a shout out to the Wolverine Leadership Academy for organizing the beach superfan theme for the Arrowhead basketball game and to Mrs. Skelley for adding Make-A-Wish cookies and a donation bucket to the Westaurant.

Our TREK program takes on a collaborative service project annually as part of the course and this was that project. TREK is an elective personalized learning opportunity for students. This focus falls right in line with West High School and our student's continuous actions to serve the Waukesha community! Enjoys the pics.

Scheduling!! - Our data has been clear at West for the past several years in that 90% of West students state they will go on to a two or four-year college for their post-high school education, yet, only 50% of students will make it past year one and that is why we push as a school to prepare our students better. A big part of preparing students to meet the challenges of the next level is course selection. With course scheduling coming up in February it is time to think about stretching your academic resume. A stretch class is rigorous, possibly AP or Honors, a class that a college admissions counselor would find impressive, and/or a class that will help you reach your fullest potential as a student. You could also choose to take an additional class instead of a study hall. This is a goal class for you. Think about what content area you excel in and stretch in that area or try something new and challenging!!

Looking for work....become an AVID tutor! - The School District of Waukesha and West High School are continuing to look for AVID tutors. We are looking for people who want part-time work and are seeking to make a difference with our students. We have a consistent need district-wide to fill tutoring positions as AVID is continuing to bring success and is spreading throughout our district. Please consider joining our successes with AVID or pass this information along to someone you think would be a great fit. The flyer and information for the position are below:
